Pov my almost 11 month-old daughter:

Papa’s preference for public transport comes from a mix of his thrifty economical reasonings but also his lack of a driver’s license.

After taking photos on the maple leaf-floored 17 degrees weather, we walked 10 minutes from the apartment to the train station and spent $10 for an all-day Family Rider pass.

It would have been $86 one-way by Uber to an undisclosed location as of that time.

Along the way, papa shoved this pink low quality winter bootie - which he bought for $5.30 from Shopee with his NS credit - on my foot. Tasted ok, though.

In the station mama and papa had a discussion about not having a discussion because papa decided to surprise us a trip to Fremantle, about 25 minutes from Elizabeth Quay to Perth station through the Mandurah and Fremantle lines.

I remembered kicking up a fuss but when I woke up I found myself underneath my blue puffy jacket with that furry thing on the hoodie in my mouth.

We went to this hipster Fremantle Markets which mama didn’t like and then had nyahnyah (lunch) at Cicerello’s.

Papa had dory. Mama had deep catch of the day which tasted like chicken.

I was initially enjoying mama’s broccoli beef porridge from ingredients bought fresh at Spudshed while papa ordered food. But when it came, he gave me fries and I non-diplomatically opted fries over mama’s porridge.

With my stomach bloated and the weather dipping further to a 14-15 degrees, I had in mind to take a nap but my parents had other plans and stuffed me on a baby swing at the playground.

Papa said, I should play until I am exhausted. So I kept running and falling at the field near Cicerello’s to shake off the made in China booties papa bought for me to tell him to buy me a new one the next day.

I was going tipsy but I knew I could walk even the entire 16km back to the apartment but I was scooped off the floor and strapped to the pram.

I kicked up fuss again. Next thing I knew, I was near the apartment with the fluffy thing in my mouth again.

Papa then made steak and minestrone with the stuff from Spudshed and balance fries from Cicerello’s. I was served porridge.

I chose fries over mama’s porridge, of course.

The world can be pretty big for a small family starting out with a one-toothed nine month-old infant even if its just in a neighbouring country.

We braved short haul flights, five-hour transits, squeezy car rides, and the heat of the seaside sun to let our little one meet her great grandparents residing on the far northeastern coast of the Malaysian peninsular.

Out there, she had sips of fresh coconut, tried to pull off the ears of a kitten, had porridge with fresh fish, bathed in a sink, bounced in an air bed and took photos with Bubblebee.

Mama and papa scratched their heads thinking why are we even doing this after the first day of traveling, along with a set of parents.

But in this tiny pocket of a family holiday which we earned after burning countless hours of our lives for work and money, while noticing we start using the term “in the past” when referring to our daughter’s younger self as a new born before she was able to crawl or make a sound just a shy nine months ago, it dawned on us - a couple of words from my old man who said - “these are moments you’ll never walk on again.”

True enough, in time to come this tiny champ will start chasing her dreams.

So in the meantime, we decided it was worth braving all the challenges that many had recommended us not to travel with an infant, for this one-toothed curious kid to see the world.

To see keropok lekor the size of her arms, to see her old folks chop coconuts, to feel the sun, to sleep on mama and papa’s chest on a baby carrier we bought of Carousell, to see her parents who could not care less to bubble wrap the stroller before checking it in the airplane because who cares its designed for flight anyway?

And then finally boil our laksa noodles - which had been left in the hotel reception for two hours - in the kettle at midnight after the little one is fast asleep, for dinner.

It’s all good and we had a blast.

All in the name of family fun.

Last weekday of this blessed month and I just wanna share this absolute gem of a makan place in Singapore.

Enjoy the sights and sounds and imagine the aroma of pandan infused fluffy rice, sambal belado and all kinds of cumin and tumeric base goodness that I believe beats the very-corporate nyonya kitchens.

From the whirring of the I-dont-know-when-they-last-maintained steel grille wall fans, the chatter of people asking “eh whats this sambaa (sambal) ah?” and one of my favourites; the sound of the tongs your friendly and loving makcik - who calls you “sayang” - use to pick up the different dishes prepared in metal and glass trays, this classic nasi campur (mixed rice) stall delivers that lunch time “Nasi sambal goreng sua” vibe.

This is Nurul Sakinah Malay Food tucked away in a small coffee shop at 11 Clover Way, handled by two amazing ibuks who hailed from Jakarta some three decades ago.

Last week, while I was tasked to survey how increasing food prices have affected small hawker joints, particularly malay food stall businesses, I was recommended to this place by a colleague and I couldn’t help but notice the snaking queue formed from the stall all the way to the entrance of the coffee shop - mostly residents and staff from nearby offices.

I was allowed to take home for break fast, samples of different dishes because the lady felt sorry I had to wait for 2 hours to interview her before the queue subsided at 1pm by which all her dishes were wiped off clean from the face of the earth.

As a result of the ongoing crisis in Europe and with our neighbor recently halting palm oil export, you’d expect to pay at least 50 cents more for a plate of mixed rice.

But like how everyone frantically invests during tough times to keep their money’s worth, one should also invest in good relationships with the makcik; by calling her “kakak” (sister) and not cik (auntie) or asking about her day or her kids so at least you can get extra portions of certain dishes she may want to clear early or at least extra begedil on a really blessed day.

Nonetheless support local and 4 more days to Hari Raya guys!

Slow and steady.

After experimenting with colors, particularly Sherwood Green and Ocean Turquoise, I got bored and looked around my house clad in a warmer tinge of white.

Took a step back in time and decided, maybe I’ll have one in a nice boring blonde finish would do.

Perhaps a sort of tribute to the Fender Esquire, the first ever solid body guitar built and debuted in 1950.

And this is my first time working with acrylic which surprisingly is easy to work with and dries ultra fast.

Will be glazing it with a nitro clear after.

Good Friday long weekend project.

Making our daughter feel what it’s like to prep for Raya during Ramadan. The most beautiful part of our family culture is to engage in trial and error to try out new dishes and bakes.

On the menu was Opor, stir fry veges, and for bakes was cookies, nutella tarts and suji biscuits.

Best achievement was my wife nailed the opor. She’s not happy that I am seen in this video cooking it because she basically did most of the work.

To be fair we tried the recipe together laaa.

In any case what is most definitely gonna happen is that none of these bakes will last till Raya.

Recently acquired a nice four piece ash Tele body with beautiful grain. Had it grain filled and subsequently sealed with sanding sealer. It’s ready for a dry fit of hardware and then color.

But I’m not sure what color should go on it, though! Esquire Blonde? 🤔

Second Offset Telecaster/Telemaster - I call it the Telejay - build. The first being back in Aug 2019. This was a mix of reverse assembly and re-assembly to specifications as requested.

This sparkly mean green jacked out machine features an offset 3-piece Alder in Sherwood Green, a Bigsby with a notched ashtray bridge and Brass compensated Saddles, sweet chime-y Lambertones Pickups, a shimmed vintage C one-piece maple neck with 9.5 inch fingerboard radius and locking tuners.

I wished I got to keep it longer haha!
